Every year around Presidents Day weekend just minutes away from the capital of the United States, an annual winter mecca of cosplay forms on the banks of National Harbor, Maryland at the internationally famous Katsucon. For many cosplayers, Katsucon is a date that they have circled on their calendars through the winter months to unveil some of their latest creations.
Katsucon has exponentially become more popular as cosplayers from around the world flock to the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in mid-February to shoot photos and videos at what many consider to be one of the prettiest and photogenic hotel cosplay convention venues in the world. Featuring a 19-story indoor glass atrium that houses shops, trees, white walls and floors, and the infamous atrium gazebo, Katsucon at the Gaylord is a photographer’s dream of natural light bouncing in every direction from sunrise to sunset. In recent years, the February Katsucon weather has been uncharacteristically warm (2018 saw temperatures in the 30-50 degree Fahrenheit range), allowing cosplayers to reasonably venture outside to the shores of National Harbor to shoot beautiful photos and videos as well on the surrounding hotel landscape.
